The Situation: 2,000 Students, Six Floors, One Shaft

Bahria University needed vertical transport for a six-stop academic building at its Karachi campus, home to the Pakistan Maritime Science & Technology Park.

Around 2,000 students use the building. They move between floors all day, and every class changeover creates a sharp peak when many of them want a lift at the same moment. A single lift would leave queues at every landing.

The space available was one shared shaft, so any solution had to fit two lifts into it.

The Task: Easy, Fast and Safe Travel for Every Student

The university set a clear brief:

  • Easy: students should not need to think about which lift to call.
  • Fast: short waits between lectures, even at peak times.
  • Safe: modern, reliable equipment built for heavy daily use.
  • Fit the space: two lifts in one shared shaft.

The Action: Two Fuji Elevators Working as a Duplex

1. Two lifts, one shared shaft

We installed two Fuji passenger elevators side by side in the same shaft, each on its own guide rails and serving all six stops.

2. Duplex control

The two cars are grouped as a duplex. A student presses one call button on the landing and the controller sends whichever car can answer first. Traffic is shared between both cars instead of piling up on one.

3. Latest Fuji technology

We used Fuji elevators with the latest technology. The two traction machines were lifted onto the roof by crane and mounted on steel beams in the machine room above the shaft.

4. A finish built for daily student use

Stainless steel cabins with bright LED ceiling panels, and a car operating panel with a digital floor display.

The Result: One Call, Two Cars, Six Floors

Group control: the best-placed car answers each call

Bahria University now has two Fuji elevators working as a pair. Students call once and the best-placed car responds, which spreads class-change traffic across both cars and keeps waits short.

Questions About This Project

What is a duplex elevator?

A duplex is two elevators controlled as one group. A single landing call is answered by whichever car can get there first, so passengers wait less and both lifts share the traffic.

Can two elevators be installed in the same shaft?

Yes, if the shaft is wide enough for two cars and their guide rails. At Bahria University, Hub Elevator installed two Fuji elevators side by side in one shared shaft serving six stops.

Why is a duplex a good choice for a university or school?

Student traffic comes in sharp peaks at every class change. With duplex control, both cars work together to clear those peaks instead of one lift taking every call.

Which elevator brand was used at Bahria University?

Two Fuji passenger elevators, supplied and installed by Hub Elevator.

Does Hub Elevator install lifts for universities and colleges in Pakistan?

Yes. Hub Elevator supplies, installs and maintains passenger lifts for universities, schools, hospitals and offices across Pakistan, with offices in Karachi and Lahore.

Planning lifts for a campus, hospital or office building?

Send us the number of floors, expected users and your shaft size on WhatsApp. An engineer will reply with a recommended configuration and arrange a free site survey.
