SMK Apartments is a 32-storey residential high-rise. Its vertical transport depended on a single ageing Japanese-built elevator.
One lift cannot move the residents of a building that tall. At peak times, morning and evening, waits were long and every service or delivery movement competed with residents for the same car. The building needed far more capacity, and it needed speed suited to its height.

Often, yes. At SMK Apartments the original Japanese lift kept its car, shaft and structure, while the control panel and drive were replaced with Monarch NICE digital control and the system was recalibrated for the building height. Modernisation typically costs far less than full replacement and brings reliability, ride quality and diagnostics up to current standards.
It depends on the number of apartments, occupancy and peak traffic rather than height alone, so it should be set by a traffic calculation. At SMK Apartments a single ageing lift was supplemented by six new high-speed units, including dedicated cargo capacity, alongside the modernised original.
Deliveries, move-ins, furniture and maintenance traffic tie up passenger cars and lengthen waits for residents. A dedicated cargo lift takes that traffic out of the passenger fleet entirely.
