Quick answer
A passenger lift is built to move people safely and comfortably, with a finished cabin, smooth ride and automatic doors. A cargo (goods) lift is built to move heavy loads, with a reinforced floor, wider doors and a rugged cabin. Apartments, offices, hotels and hospitals need passenger lifts; factories, warehouses, cold stores and markets need cargo lifts. Many mixed-use buildings in Pakistan need one of each.
2026 estimates: passenger lift approx. 25 lakh – 80 lakh PKR; cargo lift approx. 20 lakh – 1.2 crore PKR, supplied and installed. These are estimates, not quotes.
If you are building a plaza, a factory, an apartment block or a shop with flats above it, one of the first questions is simple: do you need a passenger lift, a cargo lift or both? Choosing wrong is expensive. A passenger lift used for heavy goods wears out fast, and a cargo lift used by the public can be unsafe and uncomfortable. This guide explains the difference in plain language so you can plan the right lift before the shaft is built.
What is a passenger lift?
A passenger lift (passenger elevator) is designed to carry people between floors. Its capacity is described in persons and kilograms, for example an 8-person lift rated at 630 kg or a 13-person lift rated at 1000 kg. The cabin has finished walls, lighting, handrails, a floor display and automatic doors that reopen if someone is in the way.
- Built for comfort: smooth starts and stops, quiet operation and accurate levelling at each floor.
- Built for safety of people: door sensors, overload warning, alarm and emergency lighting.
- Typical buildings: apartments, offices, hotels, hospitals, schools and shopping centres.
- Common sizes: 6, 8, 10 and 13 persons, plus bed lifts for hospitals.
See our passenger lift price and installation page for cabin designs, typical sizes and the estimated cost in Pakistan.
What is a cargo (goods) lift?
A cargo lift, also called a goods lift or freight elevator, is designed to move loads rather than people. Capacity is usually higher, from around 1000 kg up to several tonnes, and the lift is designed around how the goods are loaded: by hand, on trolleys and pallet jacks, or by forklift.
- Built for heavy loads: reinforced platform, strong guide rails and a heavy-duty cabin, often with steel chequer-plate flooring.
- Wider, tougher doors: so trolleys, pallets and machinery can roll straight in.
- Simpler cabin: durable finishes instead of decorative panels, with protective bumpers on the walls.
- Typical buildings: factories, warehouses, cold storage, markets, hospitals (for supplies) and large restaurants.

Passenger lift vs cargo lift: key differences
| Point | Passenger lift | Cargo lift |
|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | Moving people | Moving goods and materials |
| Typical capacity | 450 – 1600 kg (6 – 21 persons) | 1000 kg to several tonnes |
| Cabin | Finished walls, lighting, display, handrails | Heavy-duty walls and floor, wall bumpers |
| Doors | Automatic, people-sized | Wider, often manual or heavy-duty automatic |
| Speed | Faster, smooth ride | Usually slower, built for load |
| Best for | Apartments, offices, hotels, hospitals | Factories, warehouses, markets, cold stores |
| 2026 estimate (PKR) | Approx. 25 lakh – 80 lakh | Approx. 20 lakh – 1.2 crore |
Prices are rough estimates for supply and installation and depend on load, floors, speed, door type, shaft condition and finishes. You get an exact figure only in a written quotation after a site survey. Our elevator price guide explains what changes the cost.
Can a cargo lift carry people?
Only if it is designed and rated to carry passengers. Some lifts are built as goods-passenger lifts, with the safety features needed for people and the strength needed for loads. A goods-only lift should not be used as a passenger lift. If you need one lift that does both jobs, say so at the planning stage so the lift is designed for it.
Which lift does your building need?
Apartments and residential towers
A passenger lift is essential. In taller blocks, plan at least two lifts so one keeps running during maintenance, and choose a cabin large enough for furniture and stretchers. Read our guide on high-rise lift installation if your building is above 10 floors.
Offices and commercial plazas
Passenger lifts for staff and visitors, plus a service or cargo lift for deliveries if shops or restaurants are inside. Keeping goods out of the passenger lift keeps it clean and extends its life.
Factories, warehouses and cold storage
A cargo lift sized to your heaviest regular load and your loading method. Tell us whether goods move by hand, trolley, pallet jack or forklift, as this changes the platform and door design.
Hospitals and clinics
Passenger lifts for visitors, a bed lift (around 1600 kg with a deep cabin) for patients, and ideally a separate service lift for supplies and waste.
Restaurants and kitchens
For trays and dishes, a small dumbwaiter lift is often enough and costs far less than a full cargo lift.

Five questions to answer before you choose
- What is the heaviest regular load? Include trolleys, pallets and people travelling with goods.
- How is it loaded? Hand, trolley, pallet jack or forklift.
- How often will it run? Busy buildings need faster lifts or more than one lift.
- How much space do you have? Shaft width, depth, pit and headroom limit the cabin size. See our standard lift size guide.
- Who will maintain it? Plan an annual maintenance contract from day one so the lift stays safe.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a passenger lift and a cargo lift?
A passenger lift is designed to carry people comfortably and safely, with a finished cabin and automatic doors. A cargo lift is designed for heavy goods, with a reinforced floor, wider doors and a rugged cabin.
Which is cheaper, a passenger lift or a cargo lift?
It depends on size and load. As a 2026 estimate, a passenger lift costs approx. 25 lakh to 80 lakh PKR and a cargo lift approx. 20 lakh to 1.2 crore PKR, supplied and installed. Heavier cargo lifts cost more. These are estimates, not quotes.
Can I use a cargo lift for passengers?
Only if the lift is designed and rated as a goods-passenger lift. A goods-only lift should not carry passengers.
Does a building need both a passenger lift and a cargo lift?
Mixed-use buildings such as plazas with shops, hospitals and large restaurants often need both, so deliveries do not block or damage the passenger lift.
