Cargo freight elevators are usually obliged to post a written notice in the car stating that passenger usage is prohibited (though not necessarily unlawful). In contrast, some freight elevators allow dual use, often using an unobtrusive riser.
Freight elevators are typically larger and capable of handling heavier weights than passenger elevators, with capacities ranging from 2,300 to 4,500 kg. Freight elevators may feature manually operated doors and tough interior finishing cab (called enclosure) to prevent damage while loading and unloading. There are both traction and hydraulic freight elevators. These elevators are built to resist the rigors of big loads.
